What “self-managed” means

By default, every VPS is self-managed. If you’d rather we handled it, we can, on any plan.
Self-managed
We manage the hardware, network and data centre, 24/7. Everything from the operating system upward, software, updates, security patching, is yours to configure.
Managed VPS add-on
+£125 /mo
We’ll manage your VPS on your behalf: security patching, OS and software updates, and general server maintenance. We’ll install and keep supported software up to date, but we don’t customise or manage bespoke applications, that stays with you, we handle the server, not your code.
Only need managed web hosting?
Our Managed Cloud Hosting plans are fully managed too, but built specifically for web hosting, not general-purpose server use, on the same control panel as our regular Web Hosting.

*Only your most recent snapshot is kept, there’s no version history, each new snapshot replaces the last. This isn’t a substitute for a proper backup with retention, if you need that, back up your data with your own tooling as well.

What does "self-managed" mean?
You get full root access to configure your own operating system, software and security. We manage the physical hardware, network and data centre, 24/7. If you’d rather we handled the server too, our Managed VPS add-on (+£125/mo) covers security patching, updates and general maintenance on any VPS plan. For managed web hosting specifically, take a look at our Managed Cloud Hosting plans instead.

Do I get root access?
Yes, full root access from the moment your server is provisioned.
Which operating systems can I install?
A choice of major Linux distributions, including AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, Oracle Linux, Ubuntu, Debian and Fedora, plus FreeBSD, OpenBSD and CoreOS. Windows Server is also available as a paid add-on. The exact version of each is chosen during setup. See the full current list above.
Can I install cPanel?
Yes, you can install cPanel or a similar control panel yourself. It isn’t included by default, since this is a self-managed server.
Do I get backups?
Snapshot backups are available as a chargeable add-on, but only your single most recent snapshot is kept, there’s no version history. If you need proper backup retention, we’d recommend backing up your data with your own tooling as well.
Can I add extra IP addresses?
IPv6 addresses are free with every VPS. Additional IPv4 addresses are available too, £70/year, billed annually only.
Can I connect multiple VPS on a private network?
Yes, if you have multiple VPS with us we can set up a private network between them on request, useful for keeping traffic like database connections off the public internet.
What kind of support do you offer?
