Built Your Website With Bolt? Here’s How to Get It Live.
Bolt is fast at getting an idea into a working preview. Turning it into a real website on your own domain is a different job, that’s what we do.

Getting started
Exporting your Bolt project
Bolt is fast at getting an idea into a working preview. Turning that preview into a real website on your own domain, with backups and someone to call if it breaks, is a different job. That’s what proper hosting is for.
In Bolt, open your project, click the project title, and choose Export, then Download. That gives you a ZIP file of your project’s source code, not a finished website yet.
Most Bolt projects are Vite-based. Once you’ve unzipped the file, running npm install followed by npm run build produces a dist folder: the finished, static version of your site that’s ready to upload. If your project includes backend or server code, an API or a database connection, it’ll need a managed server instead of standard Web Hosting, our Node.js Hosting plan is built exactly for this, since that code needs to run on a live server.
Setup
Getting your Bolt site onto our hosting
- 1Export and download your project as a ZIP from Bolt
- 2Build it locally (
npm install, thennpm run build) to produce your static site files - 3Choose Web Hosting for a static export, or our Node.js Hosting (built on Managed Cloud) if your project has a backend
- 4Register a domain with us and it’s pointed at your hosting automatically, or update your existing domain’s nameservers to point here, then switch SSL on from your dashboard, or ask us to, and we’ll handle the migration if you need it
Why move
Why move off Bolt’s own hosting?
Bolt’s built-in preview hosting is great for testing an idea. It isn’t designed to be where your business website lives long-term. There’s no proper backup policy, no UK-based support, and you don’t get full control of your own domain the way you do with us.

Questions
Frequently asked questions
My Bolt export only has a README file, not my code. What happened?
That usually means the wrong export option was used. In Bolt, make sure you choose Export, then Download from the project menu, rather than Share or Publish, which only give you a link to Bolt’s own hosted version.
Does my Bolt project need a database host too?
If your project uses a database, commonly Supabase, that stays hosted separately and keeps working once your front end moves to us. We host the website; your database provider keeps handling the data.
What if I’m not sure my project will run on standard hosting?
Send us the export and we’ll tell you honestly whether it needs Web Hosting or our Node.js Hosting, before you pay for anything.
What about my project’s API keys and environment variables?
If your project has a backend with its own secrets, our Node.js Hosting control panel has a built-in .env editor, so you can move them over securely. A static Vite export doesn’t need this.
How do I update my site after it’s live?
For a static export, rebuild locally and re-upload the new dist files through the control panel’s File Manager or SFTP. For a project on Node.js Hosting, push to your connected Git repository and redeploy through the built-in Git manager.
Do I need to disconnect my domain from Bolt first?
If you’d already connected a custom domain inside Bolt, remove or reconfigure it there first, otherwise the two can conflict. Not sure how? Send us a message and we’ll walk you through it.
